There are loose guidelines for which word should be chosen when new roads are created:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alley &#8211; a narrow roadway, often just for pedestrians or cycles, in a heavily urbanised area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approach &#8211; a road that leads to an area of interest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arcade &#8211; a walkway between shops that is typically covered. It could be a thoroughfare (i.e. open at both ends)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avenue &#8211; usually a straight road lined with trees<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boardwalk &#8211; a pedestrian-only road<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boulevard &#8211; usually a wide road, often lined with trees and with other plantings and shrubs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Break &#8211; originally a firebreak, it&#8217;s now a road<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bypass &#8211; an alternative route that avoids congested areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chase &#8211; a roadway leading down to a valley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circle &#8211; generally a road which forms a circle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circuit &#8211; similar to a loop (see loop below) &#8211; it encloses an area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close &#8211; a cul-de-sac, or dead-end road that is short<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concourse &#8211; similar to a square or a circle; it surrounds an area of interest such as public space or a commercial area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Court &#8211; similar to a close, but often among taller buildings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crescent &#8211; a road which describes a crescent shape, sometimes with an opening both ends<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crest &#8211; a roadway along the top of a ridge or hill<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drive &#8211; a main road that links two other main roads, usually without many joining roads<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrance &#8211; a roadway connecting other roads<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esplanade &#8211; a wide, level road, usually on the waterfront<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firetrail &#8211; see break<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freeway &#8211; a multi-lane highway<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glade &#8211; usually a narrower road, often in a valley, where trees shade the road; often leads to a park<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glen &#8211; usually a smaller road which some kind of natural valley or vegetation feature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grange &#8211; a roadway that leads to a country estate or public open space<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grove &#8211; a road that has a clump of trees at some point; often called by the name of the tree, e.g. Pine Grove<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highway &#8211; a main thoroughfare or route <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane &#8211; a narrower country road, or a road between buildings, sometimes pedestrian-only<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loop &#8211; a road with two access points to another road<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mall &#8211; a wide walkway with shops either side<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mews &#8211; a small version of a close; typically an accessway for a small number of houses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motorway &#8211; a legal motorway<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parade &#8211; similar to an esplanade, but not next to the water<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parkway &#8211; a road through parklands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passage &#8211; a narrow pedestrian-only street<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place &#8211; similar to a close or mews<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plaza &#8211; a road that encloses the four sides of an area forming an open space; similar to a square<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Promenade &#8211; similar to an esplanade<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quay &#8211; a road along the water&#8217;s edge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retreat &#8211; a secluded road<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ridge &#8211; see crest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rise &#8211; a road that changes elevation substantially<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Road &#8211; an open road that is primarily for vehicles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Square &#8211; a road that&#8217;s formed into a square, or is bounded by a square<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steps &#8211; a route consisting mainly of steps<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Street &#8211; a road but with more footpaths and buildings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terrace &#8211; a road in a hilly area which is flat, or a road with terraced housing, or a road that stands above another feature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>View &#8211; a roadway which has a wide or panoramic view across the surrounding areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vista &#8211; similar to a view (the word is Spanish\/Italian for &#8216;view&#8217;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walk &#8211; a pedestrian-only route<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Way &#8211; usually a short road, sometimes with an exit at either end<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wharf &#8211; a road on a wharf or pier<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many towns and cities have developed substantially since these roads were originally named, they may no longer resemble the original intent of the name.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a large number of names used for different types of route.
