{"id":2758,"date":"2018-10-22T05:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T18:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/?p=2758"},"modified":"2019-02-05T22:16:44","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T11:16:44","slug":"how-do-you-get-a-heavy-vehicle-driver-licence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/how-do-you-get-a-heavy-vehicle-driver-licence\/","title":{"rendered":"How do you get a heavy vehicle driver licence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are two ways in New South Wales:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Contact a Roads and Maritime-Registered Training Organisation and do a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA)<\/li>\n<li>Where HVCBA isn&#8217;t available, go to a Roads and Maritime registry and do a heavy vehicle driving test.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For both options you need to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/learners-permit\/truck\/\">heavy vehicle driver knowledge test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment<\/h2>\n<p>This is the most flexible method as you can choose your own HVCBA provider, the vehicle you&#8217;d like to be tested in and the appointment time. You can find accredited RTOs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rms.nsw.gov.au\/business-industry\/heavy-vehicles\/licence\/registered-training-organisations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment will include driving a truck that&#8217;s loaded to at least 75% of the maximum loaded mass allowable for the vehicle to be driven on public roads (i.e. 75% of its GCM for a combination vehicle or its GVM if it&#8217;s a rigid vehicle).<\/p>\n<h2>How to apply for HVCBA<\/h2>\n<p>Go to a\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.service.nsw.gov.au\/service-centre\/roads-maritime-services\">registry or service centre<\/a>\u00a0<strong>in person<\/strong>\u00a0and:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ListBullet\">\n<li>Provide a completed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rms.nsw.gov.au\/documents\/about\/forms\/45070018-licence-application.pdf\" data-size=\"474Kb\">Licence Application form<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Provide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rms.nsw.gov.au\/roads\/licence\/identity\/index.html\">acceptable proof of identity<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Pass an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rms.nsw.gov.au\/roads\/licence\/health\/fit-to-drive.html#Eyesighttests\">eyesight test<\/a>\u00a0(unless exempt)<\/li>\n<li>Provide a medical assessment report (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>Pass the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/learners-permit\/truck\/\">knowledge test<\/a>\u00a0for the class of licence you want to get<\/li>\n<li>Pay the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rms.nsw.gov.au\/business-industry\/heavy-vehicles\/licence\/fees.html\">appropriate fee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll then be issued with a Heavy Vehicle HVCBA Learner\u2019s Log Book, and the\u00a0<em>Guide to Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment<\/em>\u00a0publication. The Guide outlines the tasks you need to perform to complete the training course and the assessment. This restriction can be lifted by taking a competency test.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and recognition of current competency (RCC) are included and the applicant can request a competency test (CT) to assess their current level of driving ability in an LR, MR or HR class vehicle, but a CT cannot be used to assess for an HC or MC licence.<\/p>\n<h2>Medical assessment for driver licence<\/h2>\n<p>Your fitness to drive a heavy vehicle is important which is why Roads and Maritime may ask for a medical assessment. This applies to class MR and higher. It&#8217;s based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austroads.com.au\/drivers-vehicles\/assessing-fitness-to-drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assessing Fitness to Drive, Commercial and Private Vehicle Drivers<\/a> booklet. For an MC class licence a medical is required:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At age 21 then every 10 years<\/li>\n<li>At age 40 then every 5 years<\/li>\n<li>At age 60 then every 2 years<\/li>\n<li>At age 70 then annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check what your requirements are if you suffer from a particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/can-you-drive-with-a-medical-condition\/\">medical condition which might prevent you from driving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>National Heavy Vehicle Driver Licence<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll get a national licence when you are licenced to drive a truck or bus over 8 tonnes GVM with three or more axles.
