All vehicles must stop and give way using the give way rules. A stop sign will usually be painted on the road showing you where to stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si051-signs.gif\" alt=\"stop sign\" width=\"169\" height=\"124\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Give way: Slow down and be prepared to stop and give way to all traffic if there is any danger of a collision.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si052-signs.gif\" alt=\"give way sign\" width=\"172\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a roundabout ahead. Give way to traffic already on the roundabout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si060-signs.gif\" alt=\"roundabout with give way sign\" width=\"175\" height=\"135\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4e4e4e;\">This no entry sign indicates you cannot drive beyond it as it may be the entrance to an exit-only driveway or a one-way road with traffic coming towards you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si001-signs.gif\" alt=\"no entry sign\" width=\"168\" height=\"123\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You must not go straight on from the right lane; you can only turn right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si003-signs.gif\" alt=\"right lane must turn right\" width=\"175\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sign means that traffic travels in two directions. You might see it after exiting a motorway or dual carriageway or after a one-way street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si004-signs.gif\" alt=\"two-way traffic\" width=\"168\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sign\u00a0means you must not turn to the right. You might see it to prevent you from turning the wrong way into a one-way street (along with the no entry sign above), or where it would be dangerous for you to make a turn across oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si006-signs.gif\" alt=\"no right turn\" width=\"171\" height=\"125\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whereas this sign is the opposite and means you mustn&#8217;t turn left. Again, this could be to prevent you from turning into a one-way street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si007-signs.gif\" alt=\"no left turn\" width=\"164\" height=\"119\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traffic can only proceed in the direction of the arrow, in this case left. You will find this sign at the beginning of passing lanes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si058-signs.gif\" alt=\"keep left unless overtaking\" width=\"213\" height=\"118\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Speed limits<\/h2>\n<p>Speed limit signs tell drivers the maximum legal speed for that stretch of road. Where there are no speed limit signs the limit is 100kph unless there are street lights, in which case the limit is 50kph. <a title=\"New South Wales speed limits\" href=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/new-south-wales-speed-limits\/\">For speed limits in New South Wales, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>60 km\/h is the speed limit in this area. Speed limits are different to advisory speeds as they set the maximum speed you can drive in good conditions rather than a recommended speed. You must obey the speed limit during the times displayed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/sl032-speed-limits.gif\" alt=\"school zone speed limit\" width=\"153\" height=\"142\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In residential side streets watch for local traffic zones which will be less than the usual speed limit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/sl030-speed-limits.gif\" alt=\"local traffic zone sign\" width=\"69\" height=\"127\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Miscellaneous hazards<\/h2>\n<p>Advisory signs with distances warn of a hazard and for how long that hazard is in effect. Drive any distance out of the city and you&#8217;ll probably see something similar to this one which warns of kangaroos on the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si016-signs.gif\" alt=\"kangaroos for the next 30km\" width=\"179\" height=\"107\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There might be wandering stock on the road ahead. Take care, especially at dusk and night.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si063-signs.gif\" alt=\"animals on the road ahead\" width=\"158\" height=\"139\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Narrow bridge ahead. Watch for pedestrians on the bridge and wide loads coming towards you that could be too wide for you both to drive across the bridge at the same time. There may also be a supplementary plate indicating who has priority over the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si019-signs.gif\" alt=\"narrow bridge ahead\" width=\"165\" height=\"116\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Slippery when wet. \u00a0Rain can cause the road to be much more slippery in areas where a high build-up of oil, tyre rubber and road grime occurs, and there is a risk that you might skid if you are going too fast for the conditions. Slow down and take care.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si020-signs.gif\" alt=\"slippery when wet sign\" width=\"154\" height=\"112\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sign indicates that trucks may be pulling out from side streets. You may see these signs\u00a0near industrial areas, for example.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si030-signs.gif\" alt=\"trucks pulling out\" width=\"144\" height=\"105\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Road works<\/h2>\n<p>Road workers may be working on the road and you may be instructed to stop. This sign might also be in orange.\u00a0Road repairs can cause the road to be slippery, and you may come around a corner to find a traffic controller with a handheld sign directing traffic, therefore be prepared to stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si035-signs.gif\" alt=\"roadworks ahead\" width=\"161\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s a worker or traffic controller with a stop sign directing traffic then you might see this sign. This sign can also be in black and yellow for night time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-994\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/workmen-ahead-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"workmen ahead\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/workmen-ahead-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/workmen-ahead-595x461.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/workmen-ahead.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If a lane ahead is closed due to road works you will see a sign like this. It shows that the left lane is closed, so move across to the middle or right lane in time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/cg119-roadwork.gif\" alt=\"lane closed ahead\" width=\"309\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s a reduced speed zone then you must slow down and obey the posted speed.<\/p>\n<h2>Railways<\/h2>\n<p>Railway level crossing with flashing signals ahead, slow down, drive carefully, and be prepared to stop. <a title=\"Rules for railway level crossings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/rules-for-railway-level-crossings\/\">This article explains how to deal with railway level crossings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si043-signs.gif\" alt=\"railway level crossing ahead\" width=\"178\" height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a railway level crossing ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si049-signs.gif\" alt=\"railway crossing ahead sign\" width=\"164\" height=\"115\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Railway level crossing signs are a crossbuck showing railway crossing followed by other supplementary signs such as Stop, and the number of tracks you have to cross. If there are red lights flashing at the crossing you must stop until the light stop. If the lights continue to flash after one train has crossed it means another train is still coming. If you are on the terminating road, you must give way to all vehicles approaching from your right or left.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si017-signs.gif\" alt=\"t-intersection ahead\" width=\"205\" height=\"134\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sign is for a crossroads ahead and you may need to give way at the crossroads, depending on the signage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si026-signs.gif\" alt=\"crossroads ahead\" width=\"167\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Advanced warning of an intersection where you have to give way. The intersection might be concealed.\u00a0Slow down and be prepared to stop to give way to other traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si028-signs.gif\" alt=\"give way ahead\" width=\"149\" height=\"108\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Windy road ahead: there may be bends that are sharper than you anticipate, so the safest way is to slow down. The first curve will be to the right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si021-signs.gif\" alt=\"series of curves ahead - windy road\" width=\"163\" height=\"119\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A sharp depression in the road can bottom out your suspension in extreme cases if you are going too fast. This can not only damage your car, but could cause you to spin and leave the road. Be prepared to slow down if necessary. It may also conceal other vehicles coming towards you so take care if you want to overtake another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si022-signs.gif\" alt=\"dip in road ahead\" width=\"153\" height=\"112\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a crest of a hill ahead. Be careful if you are overtaking as you might not be able to see vehicles coming towards you that are the other side of the crest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si061-signs.gif\" alt=\"crest ahead\" width=\"159\" height=\"116\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sign indicates a sharp right hand turn. You may need to slow down, especially if it is wet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si024-signs.gif\" alt=\"sharp right-hand bend\" width=\"152\" height=\"111\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a curve to the right with an advisory speed of 35kph in dry weather. This would make it quite a sharp curve, so be prepared to slow down, especially if you are a learner motorbike rider as there could be other hazards such as wet road markings or gravel in the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si056-signs.gif\" alt=\"curve with advisory speed\" width=\"205\" height=\"149\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You are currently driving on a divided road and the road will join another road with traffic heading in the opposite direction to form two-way traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si033-signs.gif\" alt=\"divided road ends\" width=\"140\" height=\"101\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the two-way road you are on is about to become a divided road you will see this sign.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si042-signs.gif\" alt=\"divided road ahead\" width=\"161\" height=\"118\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a steep hill ahead. You should slow down and change down one or two gears to allow your engine to take over some of the braking. Be careful you don&#8217;t suffer from &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/brake-fade-what-is-it-and-how-do-you-prevent-it\/\">brake fade<\/a>&#8216; where your brakes stop being effective. If you notice this happening, pull over immediately and let the brakes cool down. If the sign was pointing upwards then it would be a steep incline which means you should change down a gear to maintain your speed, especially if driving a heavy vehicle or towing a trailer (<a title=\"Towing trailers: the definitive guide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/towing-trailers-the-definitive-guide\/\">see this article for our complete guide to towing<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si041-signs.gif\" alt=\"steep decline ahead\" width=\"164\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Road narrows ahead, slow down and prepare for a change in traffic conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si045-signs.gif\" alt=\"road narrows ahead\" width=\"144\" height=\"104\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another way of indicating that the road narrows is a sign like this. Driving too fast over these can damage your suspension.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/images\/question-images\/si062-signs.gif\" alt=\"road hump ahead\" width=\"155\" height=\"142\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Pedestrians and other road users<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Pedestrian crossings and refuges\" href=\"http:\/\/www.driverknowledgetests.com\/resources\/pedestrian-crossings-and-refuges\/\">This article explains more about pedestrian crossings and driving around pedestrians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This area may have children present, for example, near a school, play area, or swimming pool. Be careful and be prepared to slow down if necessary.
